Why is it a crime for inmates to escape from prison or jail?

It's a crime to escape or plan to escape from prison because the legislative body said so. Laws including specific crimes are drafted, ped and enacted into law after approval by the chief executive. That is not to say that defined crimes are reasonable, fair or logical. They are what they are. It's the law.
