Dog keeps getting into trash, any advice?

We adopted a pit bull named Luke about three months ago. In the beginning I was only working and my brother was home every day. However, I started college and my brother started school so he is alone for about six hours on monday through thursday (no school on fridays). I think this is making him anxious and every day we come home the trash is spread across the floor. Do you have any advice to help quell the situation?
