Question about Lost (Long time ago)?

I know this was a really long time ago, but I'm still wondering, what in the world was the purpose of the hatch? I know it was a dharma station, but what was the purpose of pushing the on if all it did was explode? Everyone on the island was fine and it seemed to have no purpose at all.
