Signs of a broken or fractured collar bone and what can you do to help it?

A guy I know was playing on a mens softball team and the ball bounced and hit is collar bone and from the dugout I could hear a huge and ear cringing thud. He came in crying (like tearing up) and it was swollen the size of a softball and really red. He said he was fine but you know men I kept my eye out and then a little bit later he asked for some ice so now I know it was hurting him. After he had ice I checked it out and the swelling wasnt as big but still very red he could move his arm but he said that the side wear he got hit his neck hurt real bad. The next day it was a reddish purple color and still kinda not really but kinda swollen and he said it hurt really bad. Do you think its broken or fractured if so what can you do to heal it?
